Well the tartan tie is not as bad as those who wear tartans that don't match!! and I've seen that happen!
Pipe bands wear tartan ties.

shame on you Derek, go and write 100 times "I will follow Hamish's example" in your best script!
However, our Bob here looks nicely co-ordinated, and don't be ashamed of buying from Ebay, just be careful and thankful that your purchase worked out OK!

Very nice! I really like the traditional kilt and the new jacket. Oops. I missed the tartan tie. Can't say I like that very well, but I'm not the one wearing it. There are NOT very many rules when it comes to kilts - casual, formal, day, etc., but tartan ties are generally a no-no.

Well, I find myself in the minority here, but I for one think tartan ties are fine with kilts, as long as general rules of fashion are followed.
For example, if you are wearing a tie in the same tartan as your kilt, please make sure it comes from the same manufacturer, so that the colors will be a true match. Nothing looks worse than wearing a kilt and tie in the same tartan that you purchased from two seperate places in off-colors.
I even think that, sometimes, it can look fine to wear a different tartan in your tie (gasp!). Although I think this is helped by wearing a vest or sweater -- something in a solid color to separate the two tartans. And, of course, make sure that the two tartans are complimentary, both with each other and the rest of the outfit.
Of course, I don't give this out as general advise. If you don't have an eye for matchign different patterns, a solid color tie is really the best way to go. But I'm just saying I have seen it done, and done it myself (hopefully), where it looked just fine.

tartan?
For the life of me I cannot place the tartan, Bob? As soon as you post it, I will know it, but perhaps I can blame my "tartan amnesia" on it being Monday morning?

No surprise, Todd. It is not a common one. It was not even invented until 1996.
It's the Scottish Borderland district tartan, manufactured by Lochcarron. They don't even make it in kilt weight. I had to pay extra to get it woven.
I found the alleged clan affiliation for my name totally unacceptable (for historical, not political, reasons), so I spent some time looking for a district tartan that matched my family history and that I actually liked. I really like this tartan and I don't mind having a kilt that does not look like anyone else's.
My wife and daughters all have matching sashes.
