Congrats, Nevermore. It never occurred to me to wear a kilt at your age, and I regret that.
As for a Scottish tartan kilt - do not worry about offending anyone as long as you respect the kilt and it's tartan. Treat it as a garment you love, and not as a costume, and you'll be ok. Be prepared to tell people what tartan you're wearing, and do not be afraid to say you chose it simply because you like it.
I'll let you in on something I have not shared on a message board before - had I not found a district tartan that suited me, I was fully prepared to buy a kilt in whatever tartan most closely approximated the colors of the New York Jets. I might do that, yet, one day.
