First of all, welcome to the board! I love this place, and you will too... eventually.
As for the rights and wrongs of kilt wearing in the USA... well... it's not like we're in Edinburgh. The concensus around is that if you don't clash with tartans or colors, if you look like you're coherant, if you are neat and well-kept... you're okay. We used to have Galleries of pictures here that could have shown you what I mean. Just dress like you're going somewhere nice, and replace the slacks with the kilt. That usually works when the kilt hose are appropriate in color too.
