While I am extremely skeptical that a kiltmaker would see tartan cloth that is 150+ years old and agree to cut it, alter it, and make clothing from it, rather than suggest to the man that he have it preserved in a museum somewhere, I have to say that the story is possible. I'm sure that he could find a kilt maker somewhere who would do it.

But one easy way to verify the story. He said his kilt created quite a stir at the MacGregor clan tent at Grandfather Mountain. Just contact the MacGregor clan society, ask who was manning their tent at Grandfather, and then find out from them if anyone came by with a kilt made from 150+ year old MacGregor tartan.

That would definitely be something they would remember!

By the way, I did buy a kilt on ebay one time in the MacGregor tartan that was maybe 75-100 years old. Paid all of $75 for it. :-) So there are deals to be had.
