I'm an American 4E too. Some shoe sales folks act like D is a wide shoe...nooo it ain't.

Dred - the more I encounter your posts, the more convinced I am that we're related somehow. Either that or we're doubles. Wide feet and high arches? Too familiar, dude.
Aside from my belly the biggest challenge I have is finding interesting wide footwear. Thank God for New Balance and other enlightened manufacturers. The folks with whom I've chatted at Piper's Cove and another gal with a highland wear shop north of me had the same response: forget about finding off-the-rack ghillie brogues (UK-made or otherwise) -- nobody makes them in our widths.
Which I find really discriminatory...
