Kilted Reenactors?

Reenacting and "living history" is a fantastic hobby! For me, it combines a love of military history, old-style firearms and swords, and primitive camping.

Check out my group's website below to get a feel for the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion scene ( and welcome aboard, Sav! )....

Speaking of which, a major reenactment event: "Culloden,the 260th Anniversary" is in the works for next year. Date: 19-21 May, `06; location: Fort Loudoun Historic Site, Ft. Loudoun, PA (just west of Chambersburg).

This gives folks who might be interested lots of time to gear up, and we're hoping some of our UK and west coast friends will be able to participate.

Don't belong to reenactor's group...too far away...but have, over the years, outfitted myself with full Union Cavalry gear (except tack and a horse), Confederate gear (eastern and transwestern), and that gear can be loosely modified to be sorta western cavalry.

I sometimes wear it to Festival of the West type gatherings or in local 4th of July or Veteran's day parades to honor my great great grandfathers' service.

Best of all, its fun to dress up and go about town as if it was the most normal thing in the world, or kick back outside the town's old west style restaurant.

Have thought about wearing the Union gear down to the Grand Canyon and hanging around the tourist areas and developing an in role pitch about why I need a tip in exchange for taking my picture...something about visiting Miss Lulu's to see my girlfriend Sadie tonight...etc.

Fear is I'd get busted by the park rangers for taking tips for the photos without having a consessionaire's permit from NPS....

Do enjoy the role playing for fun though. Not sure that at age 60 I want to take it to sleeping on the ground, eating hardtack, and doing close order drill again...

Yeah, Ron, I can say without a doubt the NPS folks would not like someone charging tourists for photos who isn't "official", although living historians do not usually charge anything for photos in general. ;) Some parks like Bent's Old Fort in Colorado do charge a "living history/interpretation fee" (usually $1-2 dollars) which help in the upkeep of uniforms, etc., since the NPS has the "incredibly shrinking budget". ;)

BUT, Ft. Defiance and Ft. Verde aren't too far away from you if you wanted to do some living history programs with your Federal Cavalry impression! :mrgreen:
