Well, here's the deal. MY deal, at least.
Try it. If it looks good to your eye, and you like it, then go for it. I start with the "rules" (as I understand them, anyway) then decide how far I'm willing to bend them.
The pictures you saw were probably not of a fly plaid, but of a great kilt, which is one long piece of tartan, belted at the waist and slung over the shoulder. You mostly, but not exclusively, see that at Renaissance Faires.
