pipes...
Pipes, like kilts, seem to attract people. When I was in university, a friend of mine and I used to smoke our pipes in the "quad" outside of our class, we always got a lot of compliments, especially by the female students.
I still smoke a pipe on occasion, mostly at Civil War & Spanish-American War living history events (I have a nice Petersons Briar that "looks" 19th century, as well as a German "Black Forest" pipe with the metal cap on the bowl), and folks just seem to love the smell of pipe smoke (I smoke a brand called "Highland Whisky", btw!)
Smoking a pipe in my Civil War reenactment unit earned me a nickname -- "Teacher"!
Cheers,
Todd

I smoke a local shop's blend called "Dutch Treat" in my collection of pipes...I have at least 20 different pipes, all handmade. They are pieces of art, each one. Like Todd said, they are a chick magnet, and when combined with the kilt, make me irrisistible!

Cajunscott - I happened to be smoking a Peterson myself! It's the Aran model - straight stem, slight bend at the bowl. I had something mild from the local Tinderbox, but if you get up around the Seattle area, there's a tobacconist at the Fisherman's terminal who mixes up something he calls the "Mariner's Blend." I understand that it's very popular with the commercial fishermen.
Gman - We had rented a house in Breckenridge. Absolutely beautiful there! 85 degrees in the day, a comfortable 55 at night.
And Blu - my wife was unfortunately not in earshot, but the woman was kind enough to repeat it to her later. My wife got a sheepish smile and wouldn't comment. ;)

So how many of us are pipe smokers too? I have about 60 pipes; some that never get smoked, but looked cool. I get the local tobacconist's blend and add latakia to it. When I was younger, it did seem to be a chick magnet; they'd never seen anyone young smoke a pipe. Now, the only comments I get are that it smells good (from non-smokers) or it stinks (from, of all people, cigarette smokers).

While I do enjoy a bowlful of my favorite brand every now and then, I wouldnt consider myself an aficianando by any means. When I was younger, I didn't know why but I wanted three things, a pipe, a tattoo, and a kilt. When I got older I got all three ,still dont know why, cant explain it but it just feels right.
I have an idea that if everyone here was honest, a good majority of the members are pipe smokers.
