I think the choice of a heavy vs. a light boot depends on the build of a man. Derek has a more lean body type than some of us; he looks balanced as is. Those with more "upper body" (ie. chest and shoulders or hips and waist ;)) tend to need that "blocky" look to extend down to the ground.

That said, I am intrigued by the high-top sneaker thing; I just don't think I could pull it off.

I have seen what looked like running shoe high-tops that had the padded walls extending up the ankles - they looked like a cross between runners and hiking boots - but I don't recall where I saw them.
