I have always understood that the toast is put into a toast-rack on the table, to allow the steam to disperse without leaving the bread soggy and/or tough! If your toast is cold, then your serving maid is bringing it to the table too soon. I'd sack her and get someone who knows their craft. That's the trouble thesedays - no training and no experience!

Maybe I will look into so that I can serve soggy cold toast next time. Better yet I will tell the pubs in the neighborhood to look into it if they wish to be authentic.
