I just love that photo, Ackwell!

From an unseasonally warm Southern England (currently, at 11.50pm: 63ºF/17ºC outside my back-door), and the forecasters telling us it will remain so for the coming week, at least. Where are our frosts? What has happened to the leaf-fall? Why are some of my spring flowering shrubs starting to show colour in their buds? Why are the birds starting to use the nesting-boxes? Why.....

Hmmmm. We can't walk on the lakes here even when they ARE frozen much less when a thaw happens that leaves water on the top of the ice. We'll sink in and freeze / drown.

It does however remind me of my inlaws' house in Canada on the south shore of Lake St. Clair where we can certainly walk on the ice (or snowmobile or whatever). I wish everyone who is in the "snow" belt a warm and safe (cheap gas) winter.

I'm all for cheap gas, but for those in the frigid north, I just hope that there is enough affordable heating fuel, so that no one freezes to death because they don't have the money to pay for heat. If heating oil stays as high as presently, the fatalities caused by Katrina and her brother and sister storms may well extend way north of the gulf and way beyond September and October.

I think it was about 6-8cm. Made a definite crackling sound but no signs of breaking. (You can see a hair crack on the bottom of the picture.)

When it really goes winter, they will bulldose roads on the ice so we get so called "Ice-roads". I'll send you new picture when the 1m of snow arrives
