Saint Louis, Missouri is turning out to be a very kilt-friendly area, INMHO. There are large Irish-American and Scottish-American populations there, many Irish pubs (and now one Scottish Pub, the Scottish Arms!), not to mention the St. Louis Scottish Games and the Missouri Tartan Day celebrations in neaby St. Charles, and two pipe bands, Invera'an and the John Ford Pipes and Drums, which are very "high profile".

I've worn my kilt on many occasions at various venues in St. Louis, and never had any problems.

I'll be spending about a week in St. Charles/St. Louis next June. I would have worn my kilt at a formal banquet that week, anyway. I'll make a point of wearing it while "oot and aboot" at least one day, as well.

Just got back from a two day trip to Washington DC. Wore my USAK Mackay, a black sweater, socks (pushed down), black boots and plain black sporran out and about in Georgetown for dinner and on Amtrack for the ride home from Union Station. Got a few questions (from the waiter at dinner) but that was it. Seemed like a great place to be out and about kilted.

I think Texas still has something of a "What the devil...?!" response, but I don't think it's actually unfriendly to the kilt. My DS mostly gets the "rock on" response from other young men.

After you've seen punkers or goths, a nicely dressed kilted man can't be considered weird.

While I've met a few people who said they have a kilt, I've never seen another one in this town. When I wear one out to a store I usually get a lot of second glance looks and shaking heads. Several times I've caught people waving friends over to look at me from down an aisle.
The only snide remarks I've heard were at bars and even then only a couple. One was at a bar known for being a bit rough, and here I was singing karaoke (long story). A guy with a sneer asked "the question". When I replied with "your girlfriends lipstick", I could tell he was still trying to be tough, but he was laughing too hard. It helped that his girlfriend was sitting next to him and shot beer through her nose at my comment. Humor calms the situation in this case. The other was in a regular hangout of mine. A table of Bikers had one guy that, every time I walked by, said "He must be looking for a fight, wearin' that thing in here". In this case the others at the table shut him up (he was the only one of the nine I didn't know).
Actually few people that I don't know have said anything directly to me. However, the bartender told me once that she gets all kinds of questions about me. She just tells them "That's Jim. He's a great guy. He wears a kilt. And I think it looks sexy".
As people get to know me outside of work, I actually get more questions when I'm not wearing the kilt. The people who know me seem to like it. Most of the ones who don't know me are humored or curious giving me the "did I really just see that?" look. But there are a few that stand back with the hairy evil eye pointed at me.
So Angola, Indiana, where pork is a verb, seems to be tolerant and getting friendlier.


But I still haven't seen anyone else here in a kilt.
