Until the latter part of the 18th Century the sporran was not an issue item of dress in the highland regiments. Folks that had them could wear them about 90% of the time, but for Full Dress parades where everyone had to be uniform, regimental orders say not to wear them. There is even a painting from around 1762 of an officer of the Black Watch in full dress minus sporran. IMHO the propriety or lack there of, of going with or without the sporran dates from this change in the uniforms of the Highland Regiments. Given that the idea of "Traditional" in most of the population is doing what your grandparents did, dont feel bad about being "Ultra Tradtional" and doing what your 5th Great Grandparents did!
