I used to wear a dark blue blazer with my kilts, but only because I didn't have a proper kilt jacket. I never saw what the big deal was and thought that it actually looked alright. However after getting an argyle jacket and having worn that for a while now, I can see the difference. I looked back at an old photo of myself in the blazer as compared to the argyle and can really see why some would think it a sloppy look.

Alas...I've tried several jackets but they all do look way too long no matter what. I found a tweed sportcoat at the resale shop the other day ($4.95) with the intention of having it modified but it looks too good and I'm having second thoughts. What I really am hoping for is a tweed three piece so I can keep the jacket and vest and toss the trousers...I sympathize.
best
