This is a topic that concerns me greatly, and some of you will be sick and tired of my 'bleatings' on the matter of sporran straps. Not so many years ago, straps came as standard with day sporrans and chain-straps as standard with dress sporrans - semi-dress sporrans did not exist as far as I was aware! Nowadays, chain-straps come by default with virtually all sporrans, and I cannot think why. It is proven that chains can and do cause damage to kilt aprons when worn frequently (that's one reason why having them on dress sporrans was acceptable - they were worn far less often!). Over the years I have seen horrendous damage done to kilts by the rubbing and snagging of metal on wool - I've even known of entire aprons having to be replaced. I am not joking!
The blame might lie at the doors of the kilt hire/rental companies, as it does for the introduction of pure white hose, but I don't really know.
Any retailer of sporrans, who is worth his salt, should be able to provide you with a strap instead of a chain-strap when you purchase a sporran. Most Highland Dress outfitters in Scotland have them - even if they have to rummage through drawers in their stockrooms to find them. If all else fails (and we are not all either equipped with the correct tools or the talent to use them!
) try a saddler, although they can be expensive here in the United Kingdom.
