I hear that Erskine is a fine school, went to Anderson myself. Even married an Anderson girl (native, met years after school). I guess I've spent my share of time in the upstate too.

Did a local invite you to the races, or was it college lark to party?
Oh it was a college thing. We'd get two parking spaces in the infield, bring food, folding chairs, a little beer and some mint julep fixin's. We would wear our best clothes and watch as the newbies lined the rail to see the horses go by, then flinch back as the clods of earth were thrown up into their faces when the race went past. In all, it was a 6 hour party with about 4 minutes of visible racing interspersed.

Wasn't there a little hole in the wall bar in Anderson called Bud and Jacks that advertised the coldest beer in the upstate? I think they had a jar of pickled eggs on the bar from the Roosevelt administration (Teddy, not Franklin). I seem to recall they were on the south side of town; but it's been more than 20 years since I was in that neck of the woods.

Bryan...and no, I never saw a horse after the first time ...
