I think you nailed it there. Wearing a kilt in public means conciously choosing to do something that you know can and will be ridiculed by some people. It forces you to examine your own self-confidence and purge any weakness. Those that don't have a strong sense of self-confidence in the first place probably won't do it a first time, and definately won't try a second time.
