    'Nice Skirt Revisited'.

On Saturday I was visiting a strange town, and when entering a shop, a lady said:-

'What a lovely skirt, you do look smart'.

I smiled and said thanks-at which point she said that she'd mant to say Kilt, but came out with the first word that entered her head: going on to make nice coments about seeing the kilt and mean wearing one.

The point of this post being that if I'd made a sharp retort, I'd have offended her and not felt so good myself: as it is we were both pleased by the exchange-so it was a positive encounter.

This in turn links to my earlier views that it is better to smile and be nice when people say something, even if they do not use the right words: for by so doing we will be acting to promote the kilt and kilt wearing.

Agreed. "Thanks!" is a great response to that comment.

If it was a chowderhead who was trying to take the piss out of you by saying "nice skirt", "Thanks!" is probably the best response too.

Chowderhead: "Hey, nice skirt buddy." *snicker*

    Handsome Devil in Kilt: "Thanks!"

Chowderhead: "Erm, you were supposed to get upset..."

Why make smart remarks if you don't have to. Thus is the motto at work this year. Of course some co-workers are very confused by our new improved attitude. That is why I am being nice. It keeps them guessing whats wrong.

It can also work when the comment isn't so innocent.

Last summer a woman in grocery store gave me the "nice skirt" comment in an obviously sarcastic tone and a scornful look. I smiled back and in a pleasant sincere tone replied, "It should be for $600." Quite dis-armed, all she could do was roll her eyes and move on. Another woman standing nearby just smiled at me knowingly.

A negative remark ended up making my day!
