Update - Kilted in the classroom

Classes began at my community college yesterday - so I thought I'd start off teaching each course kilted. I had NO negative comments - I guess if there were student's that didn't like it - they kept their opionions to themselves. One male student asked if I always wear a kilt - I said "I guess we'll see won't we." Now there were a few giggles in the hall - but that's to be expected from 18 - 20 year olds I suppose. I did have a few positive comments - mostly from women - I guess there's no surprise there. Our division secretary did say "Its about time men figured out just how comfortable "skirts" are... you look great!"

I start two other classes today - so we'll see how things go. For now, I have two observations... First, I'm surprised how quickly I'm getting used to wearing my kilt - It doesn't feel like a costume, it feels like clothes (does that make any sense?). Second, I can see that owning just one Stillwater McLeod Hunting isn't going to cut it... sigh...

Good news, but I'm not at all surprised. I've taught many First Aid and CPR classes kilted.

My students ranged in age from teenaged lifeguards to elderly chiropractors.

I've taught coaches, atheletic trainers, nurses, and a strip-club owner. I've never had a problem or negative comment.

Congratulations Phil. You may find fewer students skipping class, more attentiveness, and higher grades because you are wearing the kilt.

I think its awsome that you have been wearing your kilt to class. i wear my most of the time to classes but im dealing with grade 10 to 12 so i got alot of grief right of the bat. but know the students seem to be used to it now. 8)

Good thread, Phil, which will encourage acceptance of everyday kilt wearing. I've been working in another town this past week and wore my black kilt and Argyll jacket one day as a change from my more usual trousered suits. Working as a self employed consultant and visiting a public office, nobody commented on my kilt the day I wore it, but on returning trousered the following day one of the female staff suggested I should wear my kilt more often. On the kilted day, I also had to go out to buy a sandwich during the dinner hour while all the high school kids were out on the street, and the kilt didn't draw their attention or comments at all.

I have yet to get up in front of a class, kilted, though I've done some of our "in the middle" staff support brown-bag lunches, kilted. So far, nothing but good comments and a few comments from my coworker who coordinates those things that the ladies like it!
