I wear my Stillwater standards with temps in the 30F range. I find them warm enough except when there is a strong wind that is actually making a windchill factor in the 20's F. I have worn my Stillwater Black heavywieght out when it was 6 F, sunny, and very little wind. It was plenty warm. Of course there comes a point where the temperature is low enough to cause frostbite to exposed skin where a kilt could allow frostbite around the knees.

So I guess it's a combination of kilt weight + temperature + windchill + amount of physical activity that would determine weather it's to cold to be wearing a kilt outside for extended periods. I would say if you feel too cold, it's time to get indoors.

    -10c

I wore my NightStalker in -10C and I was fine. Much below that starts to get too cold without a heavy coat. With a coat, it really does not matter what you are wearing under it.

My wife got me the over the knee wool socks from

    http://www.hamiltondrygoods.com/sock.html

and with my SWK wool I can walk the dog at -10° F No problem. If the win picks up I pull the socks over the knees and No Problem . Except to bend over to pull up the socks.

I've had the temperature debate with my wife many times and I can honestly say I am at least as warm as I would be in pants, even in a USA Casual. The key to me is that the pleats maintain a very good warm air barrier between my legs and the outside temp. When wearing jeans, the denim is quickly cooled by the outside air and conducted to the inside where it is constantly touching my legg...brrrrrrrr. My kilt has 2 - 3 layers depending on apron or pleat, the inner layer stays warm from my body heat and is not cooled by the outside thanks to the middle layer. I'll deal with the occasional cool breeze..a guys got to have something to smile about

I've tried explaining what cavscout just outlined to skeptical people who still don't buy it, women in particular. They "wear skirts all the time" and even when it's pointed out that the skirts they wear aren't made of 16 oz. wool and have eight yard of material pleated in the back they still don't buy it.

My wife still doesn't get it either. I think they tend to forget about the fact that men have more hair also. If you've ever shaved and tehn gone outside in the cold you know how nice a layer of hair is for warmth.

By the way I'm also sporting my Hamilton Dry goods hose toady and I'm telllin ya, these are some great socks for guys with large calves. No garters and I'm nice -n- toasty

Cotton. They are still very thick and come well over my knee when unrolled so I have a nice beefy cuff. The wool hose not having an ankle worried me about the fit.
