The sash can be worn bandolier style or like a fly plaid.
Always over the right shoulder (left shoulder for chiefs and dancers).
A large shawl can be worn...err...like a shawl I guess (less formal :confused: )
I'm not an expert, but I also ordered a tartan shawl for my gal, so I tried to find the same information you're looking for.
Source: "So you're going to wear the kilt!" "And the ladies" pages 41-44.
(the shawl is not mentioned there, so I presume it's "casual or fashion")
