    Rab -
I'm putting together the funds for my next kilt, but afterwards I'd really like to add one of your sgians to my collection.

How well do they take/hold an edge?

    Rab,

I am a knife admirer and junkie as well as loving all kinds of wood and wood decorations, art, accents, etc.. You have just capture them both together. Are these on your site with prices?

This is the allround knife that was used by the miners in the Harz mountains in Germany, a "scherper" knife.
My father, a mining engineer studied there, so it is a possibility to honour him.

    Sgian Dubh blades

A couple of folks have asked about Sgian Dubh blades

I find that the 'Damasteel' Damascus takes a far better edge than the hand-forged Damascus which in turn is better then the ordinary stainless blades.
Titanium is similar to low end stainless and silver looks very nice (although I'm trying to source a supplier of Argentium silver which can be hardened.)

Mostly I've been using bought in blades and blanks for re-working while making the odd custom blade from scratch. However I'm moving more towards making my own blades and just using the odd bought-in blade.

I've updated my website with some info on the blades I use here.

A couple of my Damascus Sgian Dubh's

Here are two of my Sgian Dubh's. I actually got them off of Ebay about 3 years ago. I young knife maker from Amsterdam made them in his Father's forge. His Father folded the Damascus steel.

The black one is made with petrified walnut, found on a dig in the Arctic. It was dated back to the Mammoth age.

The brown one has a petrified Woolly tusk for the pommel from the same dig. The lad did some scrimshaw work on the one side.

I got these for an incredible price. He was an unknown knife maker and it was his first time on Ebay.

    Enjoy...David

    Smile

You know there are some kit knives available from different manufacturers. Check out Blade Magazine at your local book store. One of the companys was smokey mountain knife works I think. Any way I used to make knives a long tome ago and there are some nice kits out there and not terribly expensive either. Have fun!

Images are inaccessable. I think you need to make the gallery public
