Well, again I say that as a retired soldier I promise that I will never wear the Polaris tartan and I'd like to thank every Squid at the trigger of the large guns for getting those rounds right in that 8 digit grid coordiate and not on my ***. I'd like to thank the Jr. Bird men for their back-up with the fast movers when we down in the mud needed them and to those Marine recons, I never minded going into the bush and showing you the way home once you got yourselves lost, really. (These are inter-armed forces teases so don't anyone throw any tantrums).< ===I feel that I have to add this disclaimer since some folks take too much to heart.
Chris.

Talk to your dad again. If he's for it cool. If not you got your answer either way. Good luck.

Believe it or not Ron it was the guys like you and the guys that applied for congressional appointment on their own that gave us hope for the middie program. Most of you were there because you wanted to be not because daddy had money or knew someone and wanted their boy to be a ring knocker. Some great officers in all branches have come out of the USNA and affiliated programs like NROTC. My own personal favorite USNA grad was Robert A. Heinlein.
To keep this on topic... The type of middie I was making reference to would own a beautiful kilt (1) with full kit and wear it maybe once or twice or only on "special" occasions. The type that would look down on us for wearing it casually.

Hmmm, my cousin (more like what the Navajos call "cousin-brother" - we grew up together) graduated Annapolis and became an Airdale. Made Commander I think. Anyway, he's long retired and works as a tutor in the mountains of North Carolina. Think I've almost got him convinced to wear a kilt. But he want's a contemporary kilt like the UK Workman's for yard work (huge yard)...ever the engineer.
So, that makes sense.
And you're right. I was there because I wanted it.
Silly me,

I would be wearing this tartan to honor him ,but I don't want step on anyones toes in the process. I realize that anyone can wear what they like but I am very respectful of the military tartans and respect the fact that they should be earned but would love to know how you guys feel.
Thanks in advance

As a 16 year submarine vet I say GO FOR IT. FHP is a sharp looking bunch, so I have no doubt you will do the Navy nothing but honor.

As a dolphin wearer myself, my vote is to go for it; especially since it is in honor of your father. Now, if you were to wear dolphins, that's a different story since they have to be earned; but I think the polaris tartan would be a grand tribute. I want one, but at $85 a yard for a special run, that one will wait a while.

It might be a while for me as well if I decide to do it.

I know, old thread is ooooooooold.
But, since it exists and it's possible that it will be read some time in the future, I'd like to add a few details simply for completeness.
Matt refers to Polaris as a ship. In fact, Polaris was a class of ships that carried the Polaris Fleet Ballistic Missile or its successor Poseidon C3 or Trident C4. The Ohio class boats aren't part of the Polaris group.
As I understand it, the Polaris Military Tartan was designed by Alexander MacIntyre of Strone in 1964 at the behest of Capt Walter Schlech who was Commodore SUBRON 14 August 1961 - November 1962. There has been some dispute about the proper colors of the over check. I've written more about that here.

I'll just mention that the Edzell tartan is in stock at USA Kilts. I don't know of anyone who has Polaris in stock; you'd have to get it specially woven.
