I don't have a clue, but...
But I'd like to start wearing kilts as close to full-time as I can
Congrats!

I have a bolt of material just waiting to become maybe four or five kilts. It is a sort of tartan and was very cheap at 2UK pounds per metre, found on eBay. Just search for 'fabric'.
The pattern is pleatable to three different stripes and the sett, so justifying the purchase of so much fabric.
I think that if you got a light coloured cotton material it would be possible to dye each kilt a different colour - perhaps colouring it as a kilt length rather than after pleating, which might give a more even colouring.
As kilts seem to be fairly long lasting garments it might be a bit boring to have all the same.

OK problem solved, we don't flood today.
I can see that having kilts all the same fitting would be good - but all the same colour?
I have known some really conservative dressers - but 4 or 5 kilts the same colour?
I supose it rather solves the problem of deciding what to wear....
There is quite a lot of information available if you just type 'making kilt' into a search engine.

Here is the link
I spent about two hours reviewing everything he says, and pouring over the other links he gives on this page, and I'm very much less intimidated by the prospect of making my own kilts now. It looks much more simple than I had thought it was; no offense to Barb, but her book, while fascinating, is very complex, and I can't sew by hand!, and Jeff's design here is supposed to be quickly produced.
The idea of having identical kilts...well, I'm not the most fashion-concious chap, and you know, I figured I might add cargo pockets to one, and make the apron wider on another...but generally speaking I don't mind wearing similar clothes. I have 4 pairs of almost identical black slacks I wear pretty often...doesn't bug me at all. Plus, with a simple self-color kilt, I have a variety of shirts, and so the outfit wouldn't always look the same.
So...I guess what I'm hearing is that I should look for cheap cloth on eBay? What about weights? Denim and flannel...
