Technically, I don't believe that anyone in the pictures is wearing 'tartan' hose. I believe they are 'diced' hose, or commonly called 'argylle' (never know how to spell that one)

And no, they do not match the kilt......

On a bit of a tangent, but relevent to this thread...

I have two pairs of off-white kilt hose (approx. 50/50 blend of acrylic and wool) purchased before I discovered the font of wisdom that is this board. Since I am now loathe to wear them I felt that trying a dye job was worth the risk.
I have a neat new brown button-down shirt that I wanted to match, a la Hamish the Wise, so I grabbed a box of Rit dye and gave it a whirl. The result was better than I had hoped for, as the irregular distribution of the wool and acrylic fibers produced a very pleasing effect in the hose, and the dye took very well.

    That is a neat idea!

There is no end to the resourcefulness of folks on the board....

Oh, I did see several diced and tartan socks for sale on various merchants' websites. The diced ones are much less expensive, and the tartan ones (actually argylle, the patterns were more diamond than square) were much more expensive, as it seems they are more 'made to order'.

Red/white and red/black diced are fairly common....

You can also just buy regular argyll (or argyle) socks and cut them so that they act as the cuff on a similarly coloured pair of solid hose. Then again, there are also the "women's" over-the-knee argyles. Cheap.
