I third the two above opinions. You can also get SKs without elastic or patch.
My localest kilt maker Tartan Patch has a 6 to 8 month wait, I can drive to SK in 22 minutes and pick one up (kilt pin tomorrow) and they're nice folks too.
Down here in the Southwest the weight is not much of a factor excpet when it gets "really cold" (below 60 degrees)
