Casting the Wee Free Men?

So my daughter brought up the topic of the upcoming film of The Wee Free Men and we started speculating on the casting. Robin Williams for Rob Anybody! Billy Connolly for William the Gonnagle!

Well, Sam Raimi is directing it, so it's a good bet Ted Raimi, Lucy Lawless, and my buddy Bruce Campbell will be in it. Apparantly Disney bought the rights, so there is the possibility it will be partly CGI animation, in which case there would be lots of voice casting possibilities.

Tiran..just google it...almost all of the stories are the same: Spiderman 3 first followed by Wee Free Men. One site lists it as a 2008 release....a dead tip off that there'll be heavy special effects.

But I would love to see the MacFeegles played by live actors instead of CGI. Look how they made Hagrid look larger than life in Harry Potter...the same tech could make the actors look six inches tall. Anybody remember the film Willow? I think that one of the brownies was Kevin Pollack and they were one of the funniest things in the movie. That's why it would be great to have live actors....we've come a long way from "Darby O'Gill and the Little People", haven't we? It could only be done better than ever and I hope that they bite at the challenge.

Have you seen the special feature about the making of "Darby O'Gill" on the DVD? For its time, the special effects in that movie were first rate, and still hold up very well.

re: "Darby O'Gill"...I haven't seen the special feature but that WAS pretty incredible for the time...but, hey, Disney!...c'mon, they were riding high during that period and they didn't skimp on anything.

I just hope that they don't put so much emphasis on the effects that they neglect the story and character. So much of what we get relies on blowing you away with effects and you never have time to appreciate the story or acting (or not in some cases).

And didn't we have a young (but still toupee'd) Sean Connery SINGING in "Darby O'Gill"? Put that one in the bin with Clint Eastwood singing in "Paint Your Wagon".

Wow, you just dredged up an old memory. My folks took me to a drive-in to see Darby O'Gill when it was first released. I remember being so frightened by one scene that I hid behind the seat for most of the rest of the movie.

Why have I never heard of these books? Would they be ok for a 5 year old, I think my son would love them.
