With National Tartan Day tomorrow, I'm going after work to my Pipe and Cigar Club's weekly potluck supper in my Hunting MacNicol tank!! Seems to me that there's more than one way to accomplish this, so that the design woven into the top of the hose will show.

Sandy, it really depends upon the overall length of the hose - they vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.
If they are long enough, and most of mine are, having put on the garters, I fold the tops down to the garter elastic and then fold the tops back up so that the top edges of the hose just cover the first folds - under which the garters lie. You therefore end up with three thicknesses of hose appearing as the turn over on each leg.
With shorter hose, I simply fold the turnover down just the once.
