The buttons on the ex-mil kilts might also be for matching with the old battldress jackets. The jackets had buttonholes on the lower hem lining for buttoning to trousers, due to the shortness of the jackets. Could be dual purpose.

I always wear suspenders, with both kilt and pants.
My waist is bigger than my hips, so they fall down
otherwise. I suppose a really tight belt would
keep them up. Sounds comfortable doesn't it? (not)

I only own one pair, and those are camo ones that I wear with my hunting clothes. I don't hunt in a kilt either. It would be in the way of the safety harness I wear in my tree stand.
