The last two paragraphs in that article, basically eveything from Peter Marshall on, are pretty accurate. Everything before that is pretty much fanciful legend.
The truth of it is that there was nothing representing a "Kirkin'' o the Tartan" service held at any church, of any denomination, in Scotland prior to modern times. Most churches in Scotland still don't have any service like this!
The fact that it is only celebrated with regularity in North America should be a big clue. That's because it originated in North America in the mid-twentieth century. It is only because it has become so populat at Highland Games here that it has spread to other countries such as Australia (though it is still not as popular as it is in America).
Simply put, there is absolutely no historic reason to believe anything like a Kirkin' of the Tartan service was held at any church in Scotland in the past. St. Columba & Bonnie Prince Charlie would find anything like that completely foreign, despite being invoked in many "Kirkin" programs across the country.
Aye,
Matt
