I hadn't seen that particular complaint about the belt.
The belt should not be worn with a waistcoat (vest) - that much, I agree with.
That said, I don't think I'd wear a dirk with a Prince Charles - I think they look much nicer "plain," without a plaid, without a dirk, etc.

Hey, wear what you want to wear when you want to wear it.
Although I'm an Orthodox priest, I'm not a purist.
As long as you wear it well, the belt and vest will be fine together. Just understand what you are doing, and why, and enjoy yourself.
