The easiest way to get a pattern is :
1.cruise the stores on the internet
2.download a picture of a sporran you like
    3.print it off
4.enlarge it to the size you want
5.make sure that the top curve of the sporran is enlarged enough
    to fit the cantle
6.glue the enlarged picture to a piece of file folder
    7. cut it out
    8. you have a pattern

you can cut the gusset to you desired with
I use a 4-5oz cow hide for the front and back
I'm no expert at making sporrans but this works for me

to view a badger sporran I made using this method

I'm an 18th century guy born into the 20th century and have been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century.
