Welcome from Scotland, Roan. My initial thoughts, as a Scot, on viewing your pic were that your kilt appeared to be slightly longer than the traditional length of hitting to not below mid knee. However I certainly wouldn't let that bother you. On the contrary I wear traditional Scottish kilts to mid knee and non-traditional kilts to bottom of knee. I have found that the longer length, where the end of the kilt is almost brushing the hose, attracts a lot less notice than do bare knees, so since you live in a conservative area where there are few kilts I'd agree the slightly longer kilt is a good idea.

Failte, Roan. Xmarksthescot.com is probably the most fun and most informative site you'll find for kilt wearers, makers and designers (etc). As you can see already, you'll find varied opinions on the "do's and don'ts" of wearing a kilt, one of the most commonly accepted being wear the tartan you choose with pride and respect...the rest comes easily and soon enough you'll find, as will the people around you, tradition trumps the trendy any day of the week.
