    Kiltedmusiclover,

We will be in a tent on the earlier curfew side. Hope the rain holds up at least for awhile. Five nights in a tent pitched in mud gets a little old after awhile (shades of Woodstock). We will pack a couple of extra tarps, try to pitch on high ground and hope for the best. Eventually we may buy a used pop-up to get off the ground but that will have to wait a couple more years at least.

Since it is our first time we are not familiar with the layout but will find XMarks clan if told where to look.

    Cheers! Bill

    Meeting place for XMarkers

I just heard from Macsim, who has graciously offered to allow us to place an XMarks sign-in sheet at the Clan Fraser tent. I'll be happy to provide such a sheet, and as I plan on being there early Saturday morning, I'll try to scout out an appropriate meeting place and post that info as well. Many of the food vendors shut down in late afternoon, so I think we can appropriate one of the areas with picnic tables for a get-together, say, 5:30 or 6:00 Saturday afternoon? Please let me know if you have a better idea…

Questions for you old hands at GMHG...

The website states that the tent spaces are pretty small. How much space do you really have? Is it really only 8x10?

"No vehicles at the tent sites" How do you get your stuff to the site?

We're trying to work up the courage to camp, but it just doesn't look like the kind of camping that we're used to. Encouragement would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    1. How much space do you really have? Is it really only 8x10?

Depends on when you arrive. The later in the week you arrive the less space you have. I have gone in on Sunday before just to get a good space.
You may also setup a cooking area and put up a tarp or canopy.
So you can have more space as long as it is available.

2.How do you get your stuff to the site? You can drive your vehicle to
the site and unload your stuff and then go park.

    3. You should call first to make sure there are spots still open.
They may have sold out by now.

    4. it just doesn't look like the kind of camping that we're used to.
What kind of camping are you used too?
This is primitive camping but their are exceptions.
You might notice that electricity and water are available on a first come
first serve basis. Which means bring your own drop cord and garden hose.
I ran a 100 foot hose and a 75 foot cord so we had both.
But again getting their early and having a splitter for the water hook up are the keys.
The hot showers (or should I say luke warm at best after Wednesday) are open form 6am to 9am and 6pm to 9pm.
Port-a-johns are fairly close and cleaned out twice a day so make
sure everyone is ok with those because that is all that is available.

    BUMP!

The "Grandaddy" of the East Coast Highland Games is only two weeks away, so I thought I'd bring this topic back up the list!

I've prepared a sign-in sheet for XMarks members (to be found at the Clan Fraser tent, courtesy of Macsim - Thanks, Mark!). Woodlands BBQ will be there again, and I'm proposing that we meet at their picnic-table area at 5:30 on Saturday for a group photo and general fellowship. Maybe by then even Matt can break free for a short time, and we'll still have time to get good seats for the concert Saturday night.

My wife and I will arrive EARLY Saturday morning to post the sign-in sheet, and I'm looking forward to meeting all who can attend. I'll be easy to spot: Kincaid tartan, with THE BELT!

I'll be packing today for the long drive tomorrow. After about 20 years or so it looks like we will finally get to the Grandfather Mountain Games as long as the car holds up. The tent is already in the car and the flashlight have new batteries. It looks like we will be camped out for 5 nights. We'll be looking for the Clan Fraser tent and/or the Woodlands BBQ to meet folks. Does any one have any last suggestions?

    Cheers! Bill

Bill, looks like you'll have some time before the games begin- you might want to go to the top of Grandfather to the swinging bridge (take your camera and binoculars!) for some fantastic views. Good trails there as well for a short hike. Just a few miles away are Linville Gorge and Linville Caverns- all told, a total change from Florida! I'll see you Saturday!

    Bill
