Interesting, but I guess not surprizing, really, as I have seen palm trees in Limerick.
Yes, the Gulf stream is a blessing - up here by the Arctic Circle it stays nice and mild (relatively, that is ) all year, and green grass is not uncommon in winter. The small-boat harbours never freeze over here - which they do on the south coast of Norway (no Gulf stream).
