Never been to a Highland Games before
I had never been to a Highland Games before. I and my family had a marvelous time. It was fun to hang out with my kilted chums and great to meet Switchblade5984, Kiltimabar and Iolaus! I hadn't been able to figure out Kiltimabar's moniker before and when he explained it to me in person all I could do is smack my forehead with a big "DOH!"(when I told the Flame-Haired Celtic Amazon goddess later she did the same thing).
Highlights of the day:
Watching a stone put thrower hurl the rock so hard and far that it wound up on the spectator side of the safety fence (at my feet). The best part was when the two HUGE guys came over to the orange plastic fence and one looked at me sheepishly and said "Gee Mister, can we have our ball back?"
Getting stopped by a stranger so they could take a picture of Sinbad and me in our kilts.
My daughter having to personally greet EVERY SINGLE DOG at the entire games (can you tell she has veterinarian in her genes?)
Pulling up to park at the games and recognizing a striking blue X-Marks t-shirt on the kilted gentleman in the car parked in front of me (Hello Kiltimabar!)
Wondering who the heck Alan H. was talking to and then recognizing a familiar curly mane of hair (Hi Iolaus!)
Being introduced to the very sleepy Aidan by a very proud Switchblade5984 and Michael Steinrok.
Seeing the Caber toss in person for the first time ( tagline "You will believe a man can hurl a telephone pole")
And being in a parade...
Oh, how did that happen?
I earlier introduced myself at the McCleod Clan Tent. I'm married to a Nichol (a sub branch of the McCleod's) and was informed that I was most welcome as a McCleod. The McCleod's were the honored clan at the Games and as I was waiting to watch the parade I was invited to march with the clan. We stopped at the Grandstand and I had an excellent view of the entire parade.
All in all a great day.
I tip my my hat to the fine gentlemen of X-Marks the Scot, their lovely ladies, and our charming hosts and Clan McNaughton. I can't wait for my next Highland Games.
Cheers
