REI "Kilt"

Back to the old "define a kilt" ....No please!
You have no choice of belt.
A different closure would be a better idea, with belt loops.
Then you would have a choice. I prefer no belt when wearing a backpack. Even that little plastic buckle can create discomfort when you use a backpack hip belt properly.
I would like to see a light-weight nylon muted tartan fabric though. It would make a good kilt for transitioning from wet kayak gear or around camp. it could stow in my pack better. So i do like the fabric choice though. But the design is not for me.

I think this one has come up before, but I could be mistaken. To be honest, in looking at the picture, it looks exactly like a pair of khaki shorts with the seams at the crotch removed and single width cloth replacing it. It actually looks very comfortable, although I can't comment on the compatibility with a backpack. Hmmh, and for $35, might be worth a shot. I spent way more than that on my first SK and I rarely wear that anymore as it wrinkles so easily, but looks nice enough that it demands to be ironed.

Dang, just checked and they only have the small size!

I didn't even look that close at it. One of the guys here at work sent the link to me and all I noticed was the way it wrapped. Small only? Not even close enough. Would like to find a good hiking kilt out of the same type of material the zip off hiking p#&&s are made out of. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

This has be discussed on this board before with much the same sentiments that have been expressed here. Some guys had bought it and liked it others thought it was too skirt like.

There was even a pic of a member in it so you could actually see what it looked like, actually I am remembering one who worked in a camping store and wore one and another guy who was wearing it working outside.

I'm too lazy to look for a link right now. But I believe it was refered to by the name of the company that made it rather than by REI although they were mentioned in the thread.

Just guesses on my part, but having had some REI camping shorts in what looks like the same material and similar construction, I imagine they have foregone pleats in order for it to dry quickly and pack smaller. Their camping shorts and pants are all made of a thin synthetic which packs incredibly small and drys very quickly. I shop REI fairly often, but I've never seen the likes on the racks. Would be interested in seeing one on somebody to see how it looks. Anyone actually have one?

It has been mentioned on XMarks before -- search for Mountain Hardwear Hiking Kilt.

It's been around for a few years, at least 4 I think. Mountain Hardwear only manufacture it once a year, at the beginning of the hiking season. It seems by early summer each year most sizes have sold out.

Until this year it was sold as explicitly "unisex". Given the growth in sales to men, it is now sold in two versions -- male and female. Having said that, I am not aware of any difference between the two apart from the size label -- the male version says 'Men's Large', etc.

It's clearly not a "kilt" in the traditional sense -- it's really a men's wrap skirt. Having said that, a number of XMarks members have made positive reports of this product -- both for hiking, but also for lounging (no pleats for destroy).
