The lack of pockets is not a problem at all; that's what the sporran is for! ;-)
Now I know (thanks to Matt Newsome's research) that the kilt wasn't around at the same time as the Vikings, but king Magnus Barelegs of Norway was known for wearing the manner of dress preferred by the Scots, which was something unbifurcated and shorter than what the Vikings wore. I don't think it ever caught on broadly in Old Norse culture.
