Respect your elders!!!
You know.....I told my friends that I found something that I would enjoy, that might be fun, that would get me away from the computer and out with people.
You would think they would be happy for me.
Instead, all they can say is, OH YOU CAN'T WALK OUTSIDE IN A KILT!!! WHAT WILL PEOPLE THINK?!?!?!
Your friends may think they're trying to help you, but they're just projecting their own fears onto you.
The truth is, the majority of people won't even care. They've got their own concerns.
Of those that notice, most won't even look twice. They may or may not like it, but who cares; you're the one wearing it and it's your body.
You may get some questions about the kilt. Read the threads here and you should be more than knowledgable about the subject. Oh, and be ready for "The question".
You could very well get some good natured joking. Just accept that and laugh along.
If you do encounter the occasional idiot, just ignore them. They're not worth your time.
Just get out there! Once you take that first step, it's much easier. We've all had that first time and we all made it through.
We're fools whether we dance or not, so we might as well dance. - Japanese Proverb

There is nothing quite like the first time. As soon as the first bonnie lass says "Wow that's sexy" you will wonder what you were worried about.

What is a "Klingon"? Is it a backpack that stays in place with the aid of velcro rather than straps?

It's a fictional alien race (with, oddly enough, a real synthetic language developed for the "Star Trek" television shows and movies) of warriors.
See the Wikipedia entry for "Klingon" for more details.

Thanks for that, Caradoc. I have never seen them - the films or TV shows - as I am not 'into' science-fiction per se.

Go for it; first time out in the kilt won't be the big issue which you fear.

Step 1: dress nicely in kilt.
Step 2: go to a place with lots of attractive ladies.
Step 3: accept compliments graciously.
And you'll never have "kilt-shyness" again!

Does it ever happen that people are really all geared up for this until they get their kilt, then they say OH MY GOSH I CAN'T DO THIS and then they just disappear and you never hear from them again?
Just curious....
Tonight I'm going to be wearing my new kilt when I balance my checkbook and pay my bills, does that count for anything??
No.....I didn't think so.....

I don't know about that happening on the forum... most of the people I've met here were wearing kilts before they got here, and this just ... expanded their horizons.
That said, I've met a few people in reenactment situations who thought it would be totally cool to wear a kilt, then chickened out and went English.

you forgot step 2.5
Step 2.5 Learn quickly to detect the un-announced kilt check, and respond appropriately based on your own mood, level of 'attachment', and the shapeliness of the would-be kilt checker.
