Geez....I went to Target, Kohl's and to see the Superman movie Tuesday...kilt a swingin'...lots of looks and a couple of behind-my-back-snickers from a few of the hip-hop types (like THEY'VE got any perspective on wearing a kilt)...but so what? No confrontations or anything...and this was in the very blue collar Southwest Suburbs of Chicago.

Don't feel like you're not wearing anything...you are...lots of material...more than the average pair of pants.

Just go for it...balls it out...if anyone asks, "Why are you wearing a kilt?" the answer is, " Why are you NOT wearing a kilt?".

One thing that I got from the members of this forum is support and confidence...you are part of the Big Kilted Brotherhood...strap it on, stand up straight and go out and take on the world!

...and right now it's summer...they're wearing shorts; I'm wearing the kilt...fair is fair.

Most of us cannot tell or control what people are thinking, so it is really pointless to be concerned about it. You might tell your friends that worrying about what people think is a sign of insecurity, and that it does not apply to you.

Well, have to chime in again because you are really going overboard on this trepidation. Since you do not drink, I will not recomend walking/driving to the nearest liquor store and buying your favorite beverage. Or maybe you can, most liguor stores also stock water, soda, etc., for mixers if nothing else.

And a liguor store has the advantage that the guy behind the counter wants your business, and you will NOT be the most oddly dressed person he sees!

If I can give no other advise (again), just do it. Not in a Nike way, but because all of the fears are in your own mind. For an analogy, did you ever go skinny dipping? Were you nervous? did you go anyway? Did anybody say anything? So, same fears and same result.

You do not need to make sure that it is below your knees - you are completely covered even with your kilt at the top of the knees. Also, with a Utilikilt, that narrow apron will naturally fall right between your legs when you sit. That's the whole idea of the heavy, narrow apron combined with the bi-directional pleats.

You can't look any sillier than the young man I saw today at an amusement park who had the waistband of his pants below his buttocks and a long, ill-fitting shirt over top.

I could tell he'd pinned the pants in place - they never sank any lower, nor did he grab them and pull them up even once.

Not that a kilt would be the safest garment to wear at an amusement park - it might be very amusing, come to think about it - but it would have looked far better than what we saw today.

You've gone to the trouble and expense of actually getting a kilt. Next must be the initiation rite. Hand holding is not permitted. Choose your target location such as a grocery store or gas station. Put on the kilt and pretend you're wearing a pair of big old baggy shorts.

    Memorize this

    I must not fear.
    Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
    I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
    Only I will remain.

    Take a deep breath...

Go out and initiate thyself like every other member of this board.

It's a bit of a rush the first time but you'll never look back!

Try to have fun with it!

    Fun.....Hmm.....

I put on my kilt and walked out the door tonight to take the garbage out just as the last rays of daylight were sinking behind the mountains to the west. After I dumped the garbage in the dumpster I kept walking with the intention of getting out of my apartment complex.

Cars driving through the parking lot slowed down to take a look at me, people stopped on the sidewalk and stared, and I wondered why I had listened to you guys.

Anyway, once I got out of the apartment complex and ran across a busy street in front of a car - which must have been a sight to behold - I headed west and purposely got myself lost in a residential neighborhood. A man out walking his dog stopped across the street and watched me walk under a street light. I was going at full steam so I'm sure I had pleats flying every which way.

I knew that once I was lost I had to get back to the BIG ROAD to find my way home. Unfortunately, when I got to the strip mall at 8:15 I THOUGHT that either I would be forced to walk on the street next to all the traffic or on the sidewalk in front of the stores but instead being all freaked out and wanting to get home I decided to go at warp speed right through the parking lot to try to avoid human contact.

I almost ran over a poor young woman coming out of the Old Navy. Then once I got out of the shopping center I headed down a busy street at top speed, passing under street lights with pleats flying all over and all the people in the cars seeing me - believe me, it didn't look like I was wearing shorts.

I passed some people on the sidewalk but they didn't say anything to me. I had not yet been out for 30 minutes so I walked around the block, taking the LONG way back home. See....with my long legs I can cover HUGE distances in 30 minutes.

So....was that a decent first outing? I didn't go into a store, though.
