I love critters too, always had a bunch around...down to one cat now.
But HEY, maybe I've missed something - this is the first time I've seen a pic of how Barb did the X Marks selvedge...no white....

You reminded of of something I encountered this spring. I was at the Virginia Renassaince Faire and one exhibitor had alpacas. One of his older animals had been born deaf. He used this animal to train the young animals. The younger animals would look to the older one to know how to react to different situations. Because of the older animal's deafness, he often didn't react at all. Thus the younger animals were not jumpy all the time.

Are they sociable with humans? Do they bite much? Do they like to be held and petted? I ask, because my son likes them. I am thinking about getting him one. Give me great positive answers! Because my son is in love with the Sugar Gliders, and I absolutely can not afford them!
I Shudder to think of the cost of buying a Sugar Glider. Out of the question!
+$250.00!

Here's the deal. I absolutely love the guinea pigs. WHen I bought Lemonade, I thought "How cool is she gonna be for less than $20?" I guess that's the American in me. Cheap can't be good right? lol.
First of all, they're extremely intelligent. They respond very well to noises and certain words. For example: when I open the refrigerator or crinkle a plastic bag, they think it's lettuce time and they go bonkers. THey'll squeel, squeek, and run around their cage like they haven't eaten in days . Also, they've learned the physical location of the kitchen. We keep them downstairs, in the living room, most of the time. And, they have nothing better to do than lay there and watch us. So, if we walk into the kitchen, we can see their little eyes following us. Once a foot hits the tile... they're going crazy.
They're a lot of fun and really friendly. They've never bitten us. Well I've been nipped, when I held one wrong, but it didn't even break the skin. SHe looked more frightened than me. As far as petting. They tolerate it, but I don't know that they yearn for it the way a dog or cat does. They'll lay in our laps and let us pet them. I've even had the little brown one go to sleep while being petted a couple of times. Anyhow, I'm a little biased when it comes to the piggies. But, I would definately suggest them over any other small animal of comparable size/price (hamsters, gerbils etc.) One thing we read: Guinea Pigs aren't a rodent like the hamster/gerbils. They're actually more closely related to the horse (believe that?) and porcupines. Just a little neat random thought.

I've had Guinea Pigs at different times. Some are actually qiute cuddly, allowing petting and such with no problem, but many are skittish.
They are quite entertaining none the less, and fairly good around children.
