If you are not set on wearing just traditional or non-traditional kilts there is most definely room for both. UK's are very practical for everyday wear. No sporran is needed, and you are correct that they can be washed. A kilt is my daily attire, and I wear both traditional and non-traditional types. It gives you great flexibilty to choose a kilt based on weather, daily events, or whatever suits your fancy on any given day.
