Say, Ron, if you'd like to try one out there's a couple of ways of doing that in the Phoenix area.

One is at the Kierland Resort Golf Course in Snotsdale, I mean, Scottsdale. As they advertise, they're the only golf course in the US to offer the Segway as an alternative to the traditional golf cart. Go to the bottom of this webpage & you'll see.
    http://www.kierlandresort.com/pages/...ain/index.html

Also, the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort in northeast Phoenix has just started offering a 90-minute Segway tours for $65 (see article). Notice in the article that a company is hoping to offer Segways soon for tours in downtown Scottsdale.

So, the next time you come to the Valley, maybe you could have a kilted Segway experience for yourself.

$65 for and hour and a half. I think I'll go walk for three hours and buy myself a new USAK in Clark Modern. More exercise=look better in kilts. O'Neille

Oh Segway's hae the niche, just as just about everything does. But are the revolutionary new gagdet that is going to alter the way cities are designed the way their inventor Dean Kamen claims? Not hardly.

Segways are a solution to a problem that doesnt exist. They lack the range, speed, and cargo capacity to replace cars. Instead, they replace walking, which is about the most energy efficient means of locomotion humans have.
In most cases where Segways are used, they are being shoehorned into roles that dont really fit them.

Campus cops using them would be better served on bikes, mall cops do better on foot. For some very select applications, like meter readers or maybe even mailcarriers they would be useful, but that's about it.

Now, that doesnt mean they arent fun, just that they are not all that useful.

The rent-a-cops at the Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore use segways to patrol the streets on campus. And the Balt. City Police use them to patrol the area around the Inner Harbor area. Must be a lot of fun, I have never seen an officer step off of one. Inner harbor is a big tourist area. Lots going on. History, entertainment, and lots of good food.

The scientific principle of leverage suggests that it would need a very heavy motor underhanging below the axle to counterbalance the weight and height of the person standing on it.

Ooppps, admitting to using Wikipedia can get you in big touble around here!! Folks who go to Wikipedia were likened to followers of the Rev. Jim Jones in the "No more kilts for me" thread. We were thoroughly instructed with a wonderful case study to go directly to the original source when posting lest we get egg on our faces ... shame on you for not going directly to the Segway folks to get your information.

Anyway, isn't riding a Segway around while others are walking a bit like getting in a motorized shoping cart at Walmart and causing all the other sore footed shoppers to dodge and weave to avoid you? I've wondered if your feet hurt just as bad standing still on a Segway as they would actually walking about. The cops tried them here for awhile but they didn't last long ... they just looked too silly to be taken seriously, particularly while having to wear a danged bicycle helmet.

Of course, if you had on a kilt while riding a Segway it's possible that nobody would notice the Segway at all! Such is the power of the kilt. I wonder if you could look up "kilt" and "Segway" at Wik---dia (bad word) and get a whole new article? The temptation .. is .... soooo .... powerful. It's like the Magic Eight Ball of Information; who can resist the Magic Eight Ball.

    Kilt On.

Having spent a full day walking around the National Zoo in Washington in 105-degree weather, I can tell you the "fun" of walking is WAY over-rated.

Still, with the indoor exhibits and all, a Segway would not have been very practical.

Back in the olde days when they didn't have battery chargers, they would tie the cart (that looks suspiciously similar to the Segway) to a horse and race around a stadium while wearing their kilt-like garments and shout, "Caesar is a great salesman." Ben Hur would have fun here at xmts!
Even though the Segway lacks substantial horsepower, it is an adequate alternative to walking when the legs can't always get you there. And, in USA the ADA has helped tremendously with the accessibilty concerns of some of those whom may not otherwise have a go at this significant mobility type. In other words, wheelchair accessibility works for Segway too! Kinda cool!
