Thanks for the compliments. I've never seen a picture that shows the color very well, in my opinion. It's also very hard to describe. Maybe a burnt brown-orange-gold. It's also my first wool kilt and I'm amazed how cool it was in 90 degree F weather (32 C) despite being very heavy.

The Saffron from SWK is certainly a handsome kilt and I am seriously tempted. However, I am a little confused! Perhaps this post should go in the Stillwater Kilts section of the forum but, since the topic is hot........

My understanding is that the traditional Irish saffron kilt is an absolutely plain fabric, but the Stillwater website describes their saffron as having the "hidden tartan" design - which I do not care for. I have long had a hidden tartan kilt in black wool in the Kollection, but I have very seldom worn it.

So does the super saffron kilt we are all seeing and admiring have the hidden tartan weave or not? I should really like to know, before following the temptation!

Yes it does, Hamish. It's there, but it's not in your face. If you have the black shadow-tartan, then you know it's there but subtle.

    Ham,

The SWK Irish Saffron has that "shadow tartan." I had one of these, but unfortunately returned it because it did not fit me well. I loved the color, and the shadow tartan is not visable until you are very close to the kilt with the light hitting it just right.

    Many thanks Turpin and Darrell,

Yes, that is what I was fearing. I do not wear my 'hidden tartan' kilt (NOT a Stillwater!) simply because I do not like the effect - in spite of it being "not in your face"! I have to say, this one certainly looks good in the photos though.

I'm resisting ordering one. I kind of agree with Hamish. I may weave some safron one of these days and make one. O'Neille

I don't really have an opinion about the shadow tartan one way or the other but will say that unless you're closer than about 1 m, you can't see it.
