Help me find my tartan(s).

Well, Woods is a version of Wood, which is a sept of Watson, and Watson is a sept of Buchanan (that adds a bunch of tartans to your list). There is a few Wood tartans, but they are hard to find, vendor wise, so they are quite expensive. I went with the Watson Ancient (my last name is Wood) from www.scottishkilts.com in the 16 oz jura range.

Your definitely confusing me know. I have never heard of a sept of a sept. A sept is a family associated to a clan so how can you have a family that has pledged allegiance to a clan which has pledged allegiance to a clan?

Watson was not a clan (that's why they were a sept) and therefore nobody can be a sept of it as such. Watsons were septs of clan Buchanan AND Forbes. They would wear the colours of the relevant clan. If Woods were wearing these clan colors then they are a direct sept not a sept of the sept.

Just going by what I have found. When looking up information on Wood, it is listed in a number of areas under Clan Watson (Clan or not, I don't know for sure). Yet in other sources Watson (but not Wood) is listed as a sept of Clan Buchanan (haven't seen the Forbes connection before), yet I have not found any reference to Wood being a direct sept of Buchanan. If you have any further information, please send it on, as I am always looking for more info on my name. Cheers.

One of my sources (how reliable it is, I don't know, but it is a good site) is electricscotland.com. As for tartans, Watson and Wood were Lowland names, so I doubt they were wearing any tartan in particular if at all

I have only looked into Wood, not Woods. Perhaps there is a difference.

Remember, these families might well be from different districts and so each branch associated with a different Clan. On that basis it wouldn't be odd for families with the same surname to be septs of different Clans.

I have some Woods back in my mother's family, I do know they emigrated from Ulster, Ireland (Scots-Irish) to the US in the early 1700's and settled in what is now Albemarle County Virginia. I am fairly sure they were Scots because the family helped found a Presbyterian church in Virginia. My tartan choices for this family connection would be the Woods tartan or the Ulster Red. The Ulster Red is a good looking tartan. There is a picture of a kilt in this tartan on Matt's website at www.albanach.org.

The longer you work on your family tree the more connections you will find, I have been working on my line and my wife's line for 5 or 6 years and continue to unearth a new connection every few months.

Keep digging, you will find more Scottish connections.
