Looks like a great time all around.

I'm hoping to get down to Tucson sometime before the end of the year, maybe I can sneak in on another Arizona Kilt night!

    I am so damn jealous!

I seriously have to cash in some airline miles and fly out to some of these other kilt nights....any time the subject of one here in Chicago comes up it soon becomes apparent that we could hold it in a phone booth...if we could FIND a phone booth! Good to see this Kilted Kameraderie...keep up the good work!

Man, WHAT A BLAST this looks like!

I'm definately going to have to partake in some of these kilt nights. That is a GREAT looking leather kilt. I've never been too big a fan of leather + kilt. But, Union Kilts did a swell job of it... Love seeing the Ireland's National too O'Neill.

let me see if i can describe this with out pictures.......

make 4: 11" circles, 2 out of the wool, 2 out of the liner of your choice.

now out of one of each cut out the center so you have a 3" ring

sew the liners together on the outer edge, leaving it rough edge out. so that the seems are clean after sewing the wool parts together flip it "right side out " then sew the liner to the wool on the inner ring so that the liner and wool "rough edges "are "facing" each other at this time you would also sew the "dicing" to it the dicing could be plain black edging 22" long you can buy at a fabric store ( I would reccommend this as it looks better than really small dicing IMHO YMMV)
leave about a 1" gap in back and sew on about 9" of ribbon on each side of the gap for a tie
now tuck the liner inside the wool and get it sitting right.

now fort the badge "holder" ( I cant remember what its called cockade maybe?)

cut out a 2" wide, 3" long ( 2" wide heavy ribbon cut to 3" long works really well) now cut another piece of ribbon a little longer sew one edge to the other ribbon and turn it 1/2 turn so it basicly makes an X and sew the other side together
and sew it to the LEFT side of the hat. all away around the edges
it should be about 8 1/2" from the left side of the gap in the back to the front edge of the ...well I'll just call it the cockade

.........<from here...... <to here ( hope that helps)
    ring> [ X ]__________
    dicing> _X__X__X__X_ |~~~~~~~~~~~<ribbon

line it up with the top edge of the "dicing" there should be about a 1" gap from the top fo the cockade to the seam for the top of the hat
sew it directly to the hat ...dont worry bout the lining getting sewn also it just helps strengthen the cockade just make sure the liners is where you want it before you sew

    any questions?

    GOOD LUCK!!

That is a great description. Thanks for the instructions. I'd call it a Firepiper hat or a deconstructed Balmoral. I'm off to see what I can make a hat out of today. I'll be back with the results. O'Neille

Actually, this is VERY similar to the ones I am making. So, is the head band portion 1.5 inch from finished bottom of hat to seam? That is what it seems on the pics, or a bit higher?

Also, thanks for the tip on the shaping!!!

    Your's looks REALLY nice.
