A lot of folks will recommend Laphraoig, which is a single malt from Islay. I love it too. All the Islays have a distinctive peaty smoky flavor that to me says Scotland. But as a scotch starter I'd recommend The MaCallan 12-year at about $43 a bottle. It's a fine mellow drink that is smooth on the tongue but rich in golden flavor, though peat and smoke flavors still come through gently.

Based on the Jack information, let me make a suggestion. Start with a nice blend, say Famous Grouse. Drink it with whatever you like in the Jack at first. At least you'll find out if you like the general taste.
Once you aquire a taste, we'll go down the single malt road.

Three years ago, my wife started with The Glenlivet. I've been liked Scotch since the first time I tried it...in about 1972

Also try the Glenfidditch 12, many have called it the training wheels of scotch, and it can be found in the low $30's or less.
