I'm sorry Hamish, but you are painting with an terribly wide brush. The store fronts sell somthing at every price point. Obviously there is a lot of tourist clap included, but look where they are located.
The JM Kilt is very nice, especially considering the price. The kilt making is sourced out to some very good makers. They do a huge volume and get good prices from the mills and their craftsmen. Mine is a Locharran.
Email communication is hit and miss, depends on who you deal with. Phone calls are handled professionally. As with any purchase, keep notes when you talk with someone. Make sure all deatails are confirmed by email. Enjoy.
