We Texans have our rodeos, all events related to actual tasks done on a ranch. At these Scottish Festivals there are some cool events too. Kilted KT's post got me thinking, what exactly is a caber? Is it just a show of strength, balance and the like or did the Caber have a real purpose at one time?

    Thanks,

Legend has it that the caber toss is taken from the highlander method of crossing a river, throwing a log over it and using it as a makeshift bridge.

I have heard all manner explaining the origin of the caber...from the crossing of a river, to the using it to scale castle walls. I think , and this comes mainly from hanging out with a bunch of great big , goofy ,highland athletes, that the caber toss originated more along the lines of "hey Mctavish I bet you can't do this"

It would be an efficent method of getting across the moat surrounding a castle!

I asked the same question a while back:

The best answer we got was "Hey Angus, I bet you can't ..."

I guess I'm gonna have to set the red haired lassie down and have a serious talk with her, I thought, given her Scottish blood, she would have known the difference between a Ren Fair and a Scottish Festival. More education is in order.
There was also an Irish Festival in Kansas City last weekend.
