would a different color vest than the pc be inappropriate?

Vest is full back, if you did not want to wear a vest, you would wear your belt & why would you want to cover it up with a cumberbund.

The cummerbund wouldn't cover a belt, there would be no belt. Modern tuxedos may use a waistcoat instead of a cummerbund, and vice-versa... or you can wear a belt....
It really seems quite parallel and interchangeable to me.....
So I don't see why not...

I think both work. If I was to wear the cumberbund I think that I would be very daring and have a matte finish red one, with matching bow tie and flashes. I think the red would pick up the thin red stripe of the Galbraith ancient tartan. Not conventional, but I think it would look very good.

The black one looks less bad than I thought it would. The very thought of the red one you describe makes me want to scream and cry.
Stick with the belt, and hitch it up higher. It should ride at the top of the kilt.
